Glenda Humiston
Vice President
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources

I’ve been thinking a lot about leadership lately, in preparation for a panel discussion called “How to Cultivate the Next Generation of Leadership in Agriculture and Farming” that I will be participating in at Forbes AgTech Summit in Salinas on June 26. At UC Agriculture and Natural Resources , we work to train the next generation of farmers and ag worker s -- it’s part of our commitment to promote economic prosperity and help develop a qualified workforce for California. Our 4-H Youth Development Program helps young people become leaders prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. As co-chair of the Elevate Rural CA initiative of the California Economic Summit , I have promoted economic prosperity for all Californians and worked to create rural jobs. As co-founder of the Verde Innovation Network for Entrepreneurship (The VINE) , our mission is to fuel the growth of sustainable agriculture and food entrepreneur communities with the connections and resources they need to build, launch and grow their innovations.

We are fortunate to count many inspiring leaders and mentors among our researchers at UC ANR. Rachael Long just received the Bradford Rominger Agricultural Sustainability Leader Award from the Agricultural Sustainability Institute . She embodies the spirit of Cooperative Extension , the original incubator and extender of agricultural talent, by working with growers and other community members on agricultural sustainability research. Her ideas about the need for co-existence between farming, food production and wildlife conservation to create a better world for all were ahead of their time and now are mainstream.

Another inspiring UC ANR leader and mentor is Patricia Crawford , Emeritus Director of Research and Cooperative Extension Nutrition Specialist at the UC ANR Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI) . She studies ways in which nutrition policies can improve children’s food intake and reduce chronic disease risk. Her groundbreaking work has helped to safeguard abundant and healthy food for all and promote healthy people and communities.   Crawford was honored as one of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health’s 75 most influential alumni . She recently retired from NPI and to honor her immense and thought-leading contributions, NPI has set up a scholarship fund in her honor to train the next generation of students on nutrition research and its policy impacts.

Additional award-winning UC ANR leaders include:

Spotlight on Practical Resources
Video series: Training a new generation of California vegetable producers
A 26-episode video series debuted recently on  UC ANR's YouTube channel to help train the next generation of vegetable crop workers in effective stewardship practices. Projections for near-future retirements of people working in California's agricultural production, marketing and post-harvest handling sectors indicate severe re-staffing needs in the coming years. Jeff Mitchell , UC Cooperative Extension vegetable crops specialist, assembled a team of professors from California's public universities with agricultural programs – UC Davis, Chico State, Fresno State and CalPoly San Luis Obispo – to pull together a series of videos designed to spark interest and begin training future farmers and ag workers in sound agronomic, economic and environmental stewardship skills.
Notes From the Field
UC ANR research to determine future climate change impacts today

Scientific evidence of a warming climate in California and across the globe is clear, but the impacts on ecosystems and agriculture are still difficult to predict. Sophisticated computer models are used to forecast future climate. Understanding that temperature and precipitation levels will change in the future does not tell the full story: UC Agriculture and Natural Resources researchers also want real-world experience under those future conditions .
