Video series: Training a new generation of California vegetable producers
|
|
A
26-episode video series
debuted recently on
UC ANR's YouTube channel
to help train the next generation of vegetable crop workers
in effective stewardship practices. Projections for near-future retirements of people working in California's agricultural production, marketing and post-harvest handling sectors indicate severe re-staffing needs in the coming years.
Jeff Mitchell
,
UC Cooperative Extension
vegetable crops specialist, assembled a team of professors from California's public universities with agricultural programs – UC Davis, Chico State, Fresno State and CalPoly San Luis Obispo – to pull together a series of videos designed to spark interest and begin training future farmers and ag workers in sound agronomic, economic and environmental stewardship skills.

UC ANR research to determine future climate change impacts today
Scientific evidence of a warming climate in California and across the globe is clear, but the impacts on ecosystems and agriculture are still difficult to predict. Sophisticated computer models are used to forecast future climate. Understanding that temperature and precipitation levels will change in the future does not tell the full story: UC Agriculture and Natural Resources researchers also want
real-world experience under those future conditions
